Can I visit Ortenstone in the winter?

Yes, absolutely! We do suggest wearing boots or bringing snowshoes. The trails are “roughly maintained.” They are not plowed or cleared of snow, but there is a lot of foot traffic that naturally packs the trails.

Always wear appropriate footwear for the weather. Keep in mind that this is a natural setting so there may be mud, loose gravel, and other conditions that affect trail conditions.

Please take photos of all the plants and trees, but please refrain from picking flowers so that they are there for all to enjoy. Note: There may be times that we designate “Flower Picking or Fruit Picking” but please honor those organized times.

Yes, you may walk the trails with your leashed dog!

For your dog’s safety and the safety of all visitors at the Gardens, your dog must remain on a leash, and you must pick up your dog’s waste.

Thank you!

Yes, picnicking is encouraged! As with many natural areas, please pack in and pack out your garbage. There are not yet designated picnic areas and there are no picnic tables, but you’re welcome to bring a blanket and enjoy the gardens. Just remember to bring all your garbage home with you!

Most of the art is not to be climbed upon; however Olga Ziemska’s “Strata” is designed to be climbed on so you can explore your connection to the landscape from this beautiful sculpture.

An abundance of wildlife can occasionally be seen at Ortenstone, including bears, coyotes, deer, skunks, and other fantastic creatures. Remember, this is their home, and show them respect as a visitor. Also, you are in nature, so there may be poison ivy, thistles, and other plants that can cause an allergic reaction, scratches, and/or irritation if you come in contact with them.

Absolutely no hunting or firearms are allowed at Ortenstone.

Portapotties are available near the parking area. Please refrain from urinating or defecating in nature, even in the private wooded areas.

We encourage you to take in the natural music of the woods and grasslands. Hear the birds. Listen to the insects. Enjoy the wind whispering through the leaves. Please no outside music or amplifiers in the park or parking lot.

Please do not smoke at Ortenstone. A grass fire could be devastating to this beautiful park.
