Make the Most
Out of Your Visit

Make your visit unforgettable with a blend of relaxation and adventure!

Ortenstone Gardens is a wonderful blend of native plantings, art installations (like Thomas Dambo’s Barefoot Frida and Olga Ziemska’s “Of the Earth”), and peaceful trails. Here are some curated tips to help you make the most of your visit:

Wear comfy shoes & dress for the outdoors

  • The park spans 50 acres with gravel, grass, and woodland trails—opt for sturdy walking shoes. ▹ Read a story about the park
  • Weather in Minnesota can shift quickly. A light layer, hat, and sunscreen are smart choices.

Plan your time wisely

  • For solitude and softer lighting on the sculptures and gardens, visit early in the day.
  • Midday can be busier, especially on weekends, but still lovely with full blooms and active wildlife.
  • Visit Ortenstone each season to see how the colors change and the way the light interacts with the art and sculptures.

Stay hydrated & take breaks

  • Bring water, though a merch stand near the barn offers drinks, snacks, and shaded seating.
  • The stand is open seven days/week, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. during the summer.

Follow trails and respect the ecosystem

  • Stick to trails—Ortenstone is both a garden and a preserved nature area. Delicate plantings, such as the 7,000 zinnias planted this year, are thriving. Read a story about this
  • No climbing on sculptures or picking flowers—help maintain the environment for all visitors.

Engage with the art & education

  • Look for interpretive signs marking each sculpture—chances are good that Olga Ziemska, Charley Harper, and Jim Dolan pieces are accompanied by context.
  • Keep an eye out for public programs—past events have included Nature Printmaking workshops with Olga Ziemska

Capture memories responsibly

Photography is allowed and encouraged for personal use. Feel free to snap the art and gardens—but remember to stay off private or restricted paths.

Bring a friend — or make new ones

  • The grounds are perfect for a peaceful stroll, and volunteering is a great way to connect with the community!
  • Over 100 locals have already donated volunteer hours this season.

Your leashed dog — is welcome

As we continue to welcome visitors to the beauty and tranquility of Ortenstone Gardens & Sculpture Park, we’re happy to share that well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you.

To ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for all guests, we kindly ask that:

  • All dogs remain on a leash at all times
  • Pet owners promptly clean up after their dogs

Thank you for being a thoughtful guest—we look forward to seeing you (and your pup!) soon! 🐾🌿

Timing matters — if you're visiting events

If you’re there for an event opening or new sculpture installation, check local listings (e.g., Detroit Lakes Tribune or Project 412) for details on open houses or ribbon‑cutting ceremonies. ▹ VisitDetroitLakes.com website
